Being in a relationship takes a lot of work, even more so if it’s a committed long term relationship. You have to share money, housing, transportation, and a ton of responsibilities that pop up in day to day life. After all that is taken care of you still need to be physically attracted to the person you are with.

As humans age we tend to eat more and workout less. Anybody can tell you that this causes weight gain. To tackle this issue you have to work out. There are no two ways around it. In a relationship it is common for one person to be extremely enthusiastic about working out while the partner doesn’t care much about it. This can cause an untold amount of strife and strain on a relationship.

This brings us to today’s question.

Wikipedia defines a personal trainer as:

a fitness professional involved in exercise prescription and instruction. They motivate clients by setting goals and providing feedback and accountability to clients. Trainers also measure their client’s strengths and weaknesses with fitness assessments.

It’s not very hard to see why there are so many personal trainers in the United States. Depending on who you ask upwards of 34% of adults are obese to an unhealthy degree. There are more quick fix diets and workout gizmos than the population of China can shake a stick at. Food that is terrible for you is much more convenient and cheaper than the alternative. The list goes on and on.

This is where personal trainers come into play. A good personal trainer should be able to create a full plan that helps a person succeed. That means diet, exercise, motivation, resources, etc. Trainers are more than willing to do this for about $35/hr. That’s right! For the hefty sum of $35/hr you can have your very own person to make sure you eat right, create workouts for you, pump you up, and point you to a ton of resources that they use to essentially do their jobs.

Herein lies my problem with personal trainers as a whole. Unless you are working with a trainer who has an in demand specialization or trains professional athletes then everything (and I do mean everything) that a personal trainer does is done on the internet for free.

You can use a site like Myfitnesspal.com to track what you eat and how it impacts your body. You can hop over to a site like Bodybuilding.com to access a huge workout library along with motivational articles. It baffles that everything most personal trainers know is one Google search away from most people and personal trainers are still able to make money.

Maybe I’m crazy but I don’t see the value. Am I crazy or am I right?

All of this is free today and it will be until the end of time.

The gym (like any other social setting) has rules. Some of the them are common sense and some of them are gym etiquette things that you have to pick up. To me common sense gym rules are things like clean up your sweat, re-rack your weights, and don’t hog the machines during crowded times. Most people don’t have an issue with these.

To me the biggest no-no in the gym is walking up to someone and flapping your gums when a person is mid-rep. Yes! I know that your new gym shirt is amazing. Yes! I I am stronger than Thor. Yes! My mental ability to pick up all these weight so many times puts me in the same class as Zeus. No! I don’t want to talk to you for 5 minutes about it (or your baby, marriage, job, etc).

I’ve had people come up to me in the gym and talk about just about everything. I’ve had women trying to flirt. Men asking if I could discuss my workout. One time my manager strolled up to me mid stride and started asking me about a report I’d turned in. It seems like people don’t understand that the gym is made for zoning out, getting in a good workout, and washing away that wretched stench. THAT’S IT.

Am I being too harsh here or am I right?

In 2009, the European Congress on Obesity met in Amsterdam. They came to agreement on one particular topic: the amount of food that Americans eat has been increasing since the 1970s, and that alone is the cause of the obesity epidemic in the US today. Not only that but physical activity – being there is little – has had almost no effect on the increasing belt loops.

Studies have shown that the food industry is promoting and rendering more calorie meals than ever. Food in America is generally cheaper than it is anywhere in the world. Think about it – When was the last time you heard someone say they ate a 3lb burger in France?

Are food suppliers merely giving Americans what they want or taking advantage of a viable market. Weigh in (on the question, not the scale)…

Our body weight typical depends upon our net on calories. [Amount of Calories In] – [Amount of calories burned through physical activity] = Net Calories. However, a few studies have found that other factors also influence our weight: nutrition, genetics, and age.

According to “Medical Hypotheses”, age-related weight gain is attributed to evolutionary survival (described as the Young Hunter Theory). Younger warriors or hunters, had more muscle and burned the most calories. Once they became of age and no longer needed to hunt, their bodies developed more fat to fight starvation and survive.

According to “Clinical Nutrition”, the average person loses 1 to 2 percent of muscle mass each year after age 50. This means that if you maintain the same diet as in your younger years you are taking in calories that will only become fat deposits.

The best defense for this – of course is more exercise and a more enhanced and conscientious diet. What do you think about that?

Every time you look around, there is a new pill that helps you maintain muscle, burn fat, workout less, or give you this fabulous bod.

But for some reason, I just don’t think it is that easy. If you ever stayed up into the wee hours of night watching local tv shows, you may have seen some of these wondrous inventions.

There’s Decaslim, Testoripped, or Apidexin. All promising such fantastic results with less “hard work”. Are you ready to take this step? Would you take pills that eliminated the need to work out?
