American politics is rife with crooked people. It’s easy to see why. Depending on who you ask only 35-40% of eligible Americans vote. Of those only a small percentage bothers to pay attention to what politicians do after their elections. Of those even a smaller number bothers to speak out or get involved in causes to resolve issues. This mindset combined with the mountain of bullshit surrounding politics makes it incredibly easy for politicians to get away with highway robbery.
Think about it. US citizens have elected the following beacons of hope and humanity.
- Rod Blagojevich Governor Illinois – Offered to sell Barack Obama’s Senate seat to the highest bidder.
- Duke Cunningham California House of Representatives – Took bribes for defensive contracts that he then used to fund an extravagant lifestyle.
- Richard Nixon President of the US – The only president to resign under public scrutiny.
Make no mistake about these aren’t the only crooked politicans in the world. They are just big names that got caught. Politicians have twisted and contorted the American government to the point that many citizens don’t participate in or care about politics. The country struggles because of this. Many people write politicians off as “crooked lawyers and businessmen” who enter politics to line their own pockets.
Sometimes that doesn’t seem like its too far off from the truth.
