On Sunday October 23 I got an email from my buddy Emcee and it went a little something like this.

“I was watching Bill Maher and they were talking about people in college not learning anything and that currently there are more people majoring in Psychology than Engineering and more in Fitness Studies than Physical Science.  Maybe you can research some better numbers, but I found that if this is true…our country is fucked beyond a doubt.”

I accepted his challenge and that led me to the National Center of Education Statistics and the graphic above.

If 2009 is any indication of where we are going then we are indeed “fucked beyond a doubt”.  The graph indicates that the vast majority of bachelors degrees are “general business” degrees.  Next up is social sciences, followed by health studies, education, and then psychology.  Like it or not people who earn degrees in these fields aren’t really setting themselves up to rake in the cash or have very much control of their careers.

This graphic makes me think that America’s problems are less about the misgivings of the 1% and more about the decision making process of the 99%.
