It is natural for people to change jobs. A career can easily last 40 years. Over 40 years your interests, abilities, situations, and desires change. I’ve read that most people will have been in 10-15 jobs by the time they call it quits.
That means that most people will either get promoted or give their employer a letter of resignation 14 times. Most people aren’t getting promoted 14 times in a career so we’ll assume the vast majority of those changes are prompted by some level of discontent.
Gregory P. Smith at businessknowhow.com has created an interesting list of reasons that people leave jobs. It goes a little something like this.
- Management demands that people perform the jobs of multiple people.
- Management cuts back on administrative help and forces professional staff to perform administrative tasks.
- Promotion and raise freezes when the market presents a ton of opportunities for 20-30% pay raises at other organizations.
- Management doesn’t respect decisions or empower rank and file.
- Constant reorganization
- No clear goals and decisions
- Favoritism
- Office relocations
- Promotion of poor performing associates
- Creating a competitive environment while preaching the values of teamwork
I’m sure you’ve left a job or two in your time. If so, was it for any of the reasons listed above?
