The War on Drugs

4 Comments 29 August 2011

With all the commotion around the government and their budgetary and spending habits, one can’t help but analyze the avenues that we spend money to see if we could free up some capital somewhere.  One that dawned on me the other day was the War on Drugs.

While reading on drugsense.org, I noticed the below:

  • The Federal government has spent over $9.5B fighting the war against drugs this year
  • They Federal government spent over $15B last year fighting this war
  • So far over 1,074,600 arrests have been made this year
  • About 25% of the inmate population is in for drug law offenses

One would think that we could save billions by lessening the grip we like to keep on drug law.  So what if a few people want to destroy their bodies with drugs.  Why must my tax dollars be wasted on their poor concerns for their own health.

And on the flip side, we have people in “need” of medical care, students in need of financial assistance for college, and spiraling debt.  There’s the info, here’s the question.

Is the war on drugs a waste of government resources?
