New Job Should Equal More Money

43 Comments 19 July 2011

If you’ve ever had the “pleasure” of looking for another job, I’m sure you have seen these questions on the application.

What is your current salary?

What is your asking salary?

I honestly consider my current salary to be quite personal and don’t feel the need to disclose it to a company that hasn’t even called me in for an interview.  And then there is this unspoken idealogy that what I made at my previous company is what I should be making at my new gig.  What gives?!  If I’m going to a new job, shouldn’t I ask for mandated raise.  I mean – this is the one time that I control how much money I can get from an employer.

I have a few friends in Human Resources who disagree with this thinking.  They believe that if your last company thought you were good enough to make X, then X is what they should pay you.  They also believe that the salary X is a measurement of your value in the current market and is a gauge for the services you can provide.  I can’t wait to hear what HR and other professionals feel about this.

Would you inflate your previous salary on a job application to get more money at a new job?
