Is Technology Destroying Our Attention Spans?

I’ve developed a disturbing habit in the last year or so.  It seems that I can’t fully devote my attention to any one task.  If I’m on the phone I’ll put my headphones in so I can play Words With Friends.  If I’m watching a Denzel Washington movie I’ll open my laptop, google the movie title, and read the movie synopsis on Wikipedia while the movie is playing.  No matter what I’m doing I can’t seem to ignore the jingles of my google chat, Facebook messenger, and iPhone texts for longer than 5 minutes at a time.

I’ve seen people who are much worse off than I am.  I’ve been in the car with somebody who stared at the phone sending texts, updating Facebook, checking game scores, playing scrabble, and listening to voicemails all while DRIVING.

Our technological doohickies are making our lives easier but they come with a cost.  One of them seems to be our ability to actually pay attention to one thing for a prolonged period of time.

So what do you think?
