Getting a Job Requires Good Credit

7 Comments 20 July 2011

I had the recent misfortune of losing my job during the recession.  I immediately realized it would be tough to land another position.  I was up against another 40,000 people in my area that shared my same situation.  I applied frequently and looked constantly.  And then my work began to pay off.  Interviews.  I was so excited.  I’d been on this journey for months.  There were missed credit card payments, house payments, reposessed cars just to name a few of my financial griefs.  But alas, I could sense new job just around the corner.  I even had to sign some paperwork just after the interview.  I was sure this was some pre-paperwork to my employment.

The day after the interview I received a phone call.  I was nervous and happy with excitement.  The hiring manager really liked me and told me I had an impressive resume and was just what he was looking for.  I answered the phone and heard the weirdest response ever.

We regret to inform you that you were not selected for this position because your credit is sub par.

I was totally shocked.  They immediately hung up.  My calls and emails went unanswered.  My credit??? had prevented me from getting a job???  How so?  Surely, these people have to understand – I lost my job.  I was paying my mortgage and car payments, and credit cards on time and in substantial amount until I lost my job.  And unfortunately, I focused on the more important matters which did not include credit cards.  And now I’m being penalized for not having a job.  I was in a lose lose situation.

Where’s the justice…

Should your credit score impact your ability to get a job?
