In 2009, Columbia Pictures released a film entitled 2012.  The film centered around a dramatic rise in the earth’s temperature that led to catastrophic events.  There were earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, deaths by tsunami wreaks havoc, and a set of arks that served as havens of security for 400,000 of the richest humans alive.

There was nothing that special about the movie itself. End of the world movies are nothing new. The historical context of the 2012 (the movie) is very special.  A great many people believe that December 22, 2012 will be our last day on this planet.  Before this movie hit the scene theories about 2012 seemed to be nothing more than heresay.  After the movie was released 2012 theories were EVERYWHERE.

2012 isn’t the only movie  to bring an issue to the forefront of conversation in the world. Fahrenheit 9/11 opened the door to years of investigation and bush bashing.  Brokeback Mountain opened the door for conversations on homosexuality in men.

It seems that we prefer to have issues introduced to us through film.
