Are the rich less stressed?

Off the top of my head I can think of 3 reasons that rich people should be less stressed than poor people.

  1. Financial Peace of Mind – people spend their entire lives working to make money so they can pay bills, take vacations, and do whatever else they want to do.  Rich people don’t have this concern.
  2. Exposure to Leisure Activities – A big part of stress reduction is leisure activity.  If your pockets are full of cash you can enjoy things like plays, sporting events, and cruises.
  3. More Control At Work - A major part of stress at work is related to lack of control.  Poor people tend to work jobs that are labor intense and have little room for creativity or control.  Rich people tend to work jobs that allow them to work in comfortable situations and exhibit an incredible amount of control in the workplace.

If you agree with me so far then I greatly appreciate it.  According to businesspundit.com I’m flat wrong.  The article quotes Nobel peace prize winning behavioral economist Daniel Kahneman as saying this

“being wealthy is often a powerful predictor that people spend less time doing pleasurable things and more time doing compulsory things and feeling stressed”

That’s an extremely valid point that seems to make a significant case for avoiding big money and stress.
