Would you sacrifice yourself for a friend?

20 Comments 03 March 2011

I recall a story from about a year or so ago where two military guys became the best of friends.  Their families were close they maintained contact regardless of distance.

The reason this family was on the news at the time was because the son of one of the families was in need of a kidney (both of his were failing). Miraculously, the father of family #2 was a match with the son of family #1.  Without hesitation, the father offered up one of his kidneys to the son of his friend.  All I could think about was wow – true friendship.

How many of us consider our friends to be as close.  I have let friends turn my sofa into a bedroom during their low periods in life.  I’ve even given a vehicle to a friend in need, but to say I would give of my life organs to a friend just doesn’t get a quick “Yes”.  But I know there are several out there with much more compassion than me.

Would you put your life on the line for a friend?
