Should doctors offer hope or truth?

19 Comments 02 March 2011

Certain things are inevitable – death and paying taxes being two of the more popular.

I had a friend whose favorite uncle  took on illness after illness that slowed him down, took away most of his joint movements, and even restricted his own power to get up and go use the bathroom.  Well, after seeing three different doctors, the last one was able to suggest that he had Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS.  When she informed me, I thought it was rather odd that it took three docs to offer up that info given all the tests that had been run.

Well, once she relayed this info to me, I thought “Wow, there’s no coming back from that.”  I asked her what the doctors explained as the possibility of recovery and treatment.  She explained that they were to give her uncle meds and treat it day to day.  The doctor left out the fact that death was imminent in the next 2 years.

Not sure how that sits with you and yours, but I think I’d prefer to know the truth of the matter.  How about you?

In grim situations, should doctors offer hope or tell the brutal truth?
