Is the news brainwashing you?

11 Comments 31 March 2011

I generally start my morning off by showering, eating, brushing my teeth, and sitting down at my computer.  I check a few emails and then check the news sites.  While reading the local city news, I saw this:

  • Boy takes and crashes mom’s car
  • Crews battle fire near school
  • Authorities use Facebook to track down cop killer
  • County to boost tickets to make up for spiraling deficit
  • Jewel heist takes place, just like recent movie script
  • Dangerous breach at nuclear plant
  • Head of sex trafficking ring gets 40 years in jail
  • Local NCAA football program investigated for breaking rules
  • Man gets 30 years for child porn
  • Mexico makes adultery legal
  • Jobless rate on the increase

I know you think I just made all this up, but I assure you I did not.  This was all on the local news site that I just pulled up. The one commonality that I noticed was that they are all negative.  The news and media are quick to push out things like this to “scare” the general public.  These scare tactics in some form generally persuade most people to spend money.  Homes are being broken in – I need to buy home protection; Terrible weather is coming – I need to go empty the shelves at the local grocery store; There’s some type of sickness outbreak – I need to go to the drug store or see my doctor for preventative measures.  You may fall for this all the time, and if you don’t I’m sure your neighbors do.

News and Media brainwash the public into spending money.
