Both Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X were very inspiring men of their times. They were heavily influential and both fought the ages of racism.
Martin Luther King Jr. grew up in a middle class family in Atlanta, GA where he was afforded more than the average young black men in his time. Malcolm X, however, was a virtual opposite. His father was killed when the KKK burned his home. His mother later had a nervous breakdown. These events plagued Malcolm for a long time. Thus manifesting the hatred and desire for revenge that we came to know him for. Both men were icons and had ways of inspiring others that none could do at the time.
MLK believed in peaceful outcries and demonstrations of the unwillingness to accept the disparities that existed towards blacks during his era. He peacefully went to jail numerous times for things that would surely have the average 20/30 yr old fighting for their life. His main belief was that blacks and whites (and others as well) should all live in peace on earth. They should all treat one another fairly and get along for the betterment of mankind and the future of all of our kids. Non-violence was his key point. There were several ways to fight without fists and weapons.
Malcolm X on the other hand, thought that equality was impossible when it came to black and white. His rational – whites have no moral conscience, therefore, blacks could never get along with them on earth. He thought that only through revolution and forcefulness could blacks attain their rightful place in society.
Fast forward to today. It’s no mystery that what many refer to as milder versions of racism still exists. If we had such a leader as MLK or Malcolm X here today, which would you follow. With today’s society, which leader would will the most followers.
