As a child I was taught a few things about how to succeed in life. In sequential order they were:
- Go to college
- Learn everything you can and graduate
- Get a job
- Work hard, get promoted, and swim in your money
Alas, the lessons I learned were not entirely true. My parents neglected to add step 3.5 to the process. Kiss ass and make friends so you can move up.
All too often I’ve seen well connected nincompoops move up the ladder with no problem while geniuses toil at the lower levels.
Is this type of behavior helping or hurting companies?
