American culture has a very thick set of entrenched rules. Some are to avoid awkwardness (don’t talk about your God at work). Some are stupid (don’t ask people their salary). Some are based on politeness (wait for everyone to get their food before you stuff your face). These rules are usually followed because on some level or another they piss off or annoy other people.
On the other side of the table are cultural rules society forces on individuals. The first few that come to mind are don’t wear white pants after labor day, always tip the waiter 15%, and NEVER EVER partake in alcoholic beverages alone. Breaking these rules only impacts one person, but if you break one you run the risk of being a social outcast.
Getting drunk by yourself is fairly whack but it pails in comparison to the king of faux paus…DINNER AND A MOVIE BY YOURSELF. Its lonely. Its demeaning. Worst of all, its just plain pathetic.
Think about it. What is the first thing you say if/when a friend tells you that he is going out to dinner alone? Damn, by yourself? Who in there right mind wants to eat alone right next to a table of 6 people.
Better still, what is the first thing you say when a friend says they are going to watch a movie alone? Who the fuck goes to watch a movie by themselves?
The answer to both questions is the same my friends. A loser, that’s who.
Dinner and a movie are both social outlets aimed at bringing people together. So answer this question for me…
