I’ve recently been debating whether to buy another car now or wait for something better. I decided that I want something great on gas mileage and good for the economy if I can. I’ve been reading about this new Chevy Volt that is fully electric – supposed first of its kind.
Through my Volt research, this is what I found:
- Cost – $41,000
- MPG – 40 on the highway
- It’s neither electric or a hybrid; it’s described as extended range electric vehicle
Not very appealing initially. The Volt can run on a charge for 25 – 50 miles. After which, the car runs off gas and charges itself. Pretty Cool. But with all things, I shop around and with cars, I’m more inclined to entertain the foreign car market. And the Nissan Leaf did not disappoint.
Check out the Nissan Leaf:
- Cost – $31,000
- MPG – 106 City / 92 Hwy
- Fully Electric
Towering the Chevy Volt in price and mileage per charge/gas. However, my largest concern with these cars are the ROI after comparing the price paid to my gas savings. Spending an extra $15,000 for a car doesn’t seem worth it when the average American only spends $2,384 on gas a year (U.S. Dept of Labor). That would lead me to have to drive the car for just over 6 years to earn the savings. And the maintenance of these vehicles has not even been discussed.
