We recently witnessed the withdrawal of the 2005 Heisman trophy from Reggie Bush. Odd situation in that these actions were 5 years after the fact. Reggie Bush attended a Pac-10 school, USC. The Pac-10, SEC, and Big 10 have always been rumored to be NCAA “favorites” because of their high monetary generation and fan follower-ship.
During the 2010 season, Cameron Newton of the Auburn Tigers, emerged as one of best players in college football. However, scrutiny came about when the media reported that Cam’s father had taken excess of $160,000 for promise of Cam to play football for Auburn. This was denounced over and over. Leading up to the week before the SEC championship, Cam was listed as ineligible and returned to eligible within 12 hours. There was never a thorough explanation of how and why this took place. End result was Cam being eligible, beating the South Carolina Gamecocks 56 – 17, and delivering the worst defeat in SEC Championship history.
Even more recently, Ohio State players: Terrelle Pryor, Daniel Herron, Devier Posey, Mike Adams, and Solomon Thomas have all been under the public eye for selling merchandise and receiving discounted services (tattoos), at a local Ohio tattoo parlor. These are arguably Ohio State’s best players. Had it been the regular season, these guys would be missing the next five games, but since it’s bowl season, the NCAA says these guys can play in the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas today. Many felt that these guys should have missed this bowl game as well. Pryor sold merchandise to the tune of $2500. The rest sold in excess of $6000.
Georgia’s AJ Green was not as fortunate as the Buckeyes. His jersey selling incident cost him four games and team scrutiny.
So let’s hear it.
