Today’s post is a guest post from Sue Davies. Sue enjoys writing about gifts, food and relationships. At the moment, she’s trying to write frequently for her Hampers Online website, which discusses how consumers can send food as a gift.
Buying a gift for your partner should always be a real pleasure. It’s a way of showing them how much you care about them. Indeed, many people would say that they derive just as much pleasure from giving a present as they do from receiving one.
But the thought of buying a present could actually be quite stressful, especially if you are struggling financially. This is a problem that applies to an increasing number of couples, given the current global economic situation.
With less money available, the thought of spending that cash on lavish presents may not seem too appealing. The alternative, which might be to make use of a credit card to finance any purchases, could end up being considerably more expensive over the long-term.
Gifts are important
So what’s the solution to this problem? Some couples decide not to exchange gifts when they are short of money. Although this can obviously work, it doesn’t seem like the most romantic of approaches. Once life is reduced to constantly worrying about your finances, it’s almost inevitable that your relationship will suffer.
You might prefer to adopt a new approach to buying gifts. Although you have to accept that you can’t afford to spend quite as much as you would like, you can use this as a motivation. Try to see the positives in this situation.
The challenge becomes to find the best possible present that you can, for the least amount of money. This may sound almost impossible, but you may well end up surprising yourself. You’ll be amazed at what you can find when you start searching.
Make use of charity shops
You’ll suddenly realize that there are real bargains to be found in charity shops and on market stalls, for instance. You’ll also appreciate that you can make an ordinary object become extraordinary by adding value to it.
A great example of this might be to buy a relatively cheap item of clothing and then make it more personal by creating accessories that will help to really make it special. This can be a great way of obtaining a truly unique, memorable gift.
Home cooking
Alternatively, why not make use of your own skills? If you’re a good cook, for example, then you could make your partner some special food treats as a gift. Once again, the great beauty of this approach is that it needn’t cost you a massive amount of money. Instead, you’ll be creating a great gift by using your time.
The wonderful thing about thinking about gifts in this way is that you’ll come up with some great, original ideas. These will be so much more interesting than the sort of boring presents that you might otherwise have purchased. It’s also likely that they’ll be appreciated considerably more.
Gifts that involve a lot of time and effort are really special. Your partner will love the fact that you’ve spent time and energy creating something that’s just right for them. It’s a far more romantic gesture than simply buying something from a shop.
So don’t allow a lack of money to kill the romance in your relationship. Instead, you can use it as a motivational tool to ensure that you think about some great alternative gift ideas.
