Why Do People Enjoy Celebrity Gossip?

Today’s post is a guest post from Sharbel Karam at Gossipedia.
From Miley Cyrus’ pole dance, to Bieber-fever and nude scandals everywhere… Is that why teenagers are obsessed with Celebrity Gossip nowadays? Is that what Celebrity Gossip is all about? I am sure if I enter a fifth grade class and give them a sudden test about celebrity news, 99.9% of the class would ace the test while they fail academics.

Celebrity Gossip might be considered as the kind of literature dominating in the twenty first century; or even as the genre of journalism that united the whole world through its availability; or the kind of rip-off most commonly used online. Teenagers all over the world surf these blogs, explore them and study them. But why?

It is widely known that teen celebrities are the most influential with teeangers between the ages of 8 and 16; among these celebrities we can list Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, Jonas Brothers and many others.

And again we find ourselves facing the same question: Why?

As a celebrity blogger, I kind of have direct contact with some crazed fans. The number one reason fans follow all the news we post is to actually imitate their idols. Some teenagers prefer having a lifestyle similar to their idols, which makes them feel closer to them. And as their idols, most teenagers consider celebrities as the people who are most likely to be right about something, because they look up to them. This category of teenagers looks up at famous people as “GODS ON EARTH” and would follow them even if they were about to throw themselves out a window. And to be honest, this category of teenagers suffers from a lack of a social life. The only reason they follow celebrity news is to worship famous people.

But on the other hand , I can’t ignore the fact that there are a few people who don’t suffer from this syndrome. I usually get comments defending or offending a certain celebrity, which causes a feud between the fans themselves. For example: It is known that Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus were considered had a serious feud, which is why Gomez fans trash Miley Cyrus and Cyrus fans trash Selena Gomez.

There is a small group of people who are actual fans and they truly admire the artist not the celebrity. How are they different? Their commentary makes sense and they have their own sense of self worth.

But who are we kidding? Celebrity gossip reading has transformed into a lifestyle. People meeting on fan forums and fight for the dumbest reasons. People are addicted to it, and the more they read it the more they disconnect from reality. Let’s be clear here, there can only be one president, so odds are none of you guys (the fans) will be president. And the same thing goes for rock stars.
That’s the funniest part, fans say that celebrity bloggers do all the dirty work. Keep this in mind, without an audience there would be no work to do. So you’re as guilty as us IF ever what we did was wrong.
You might consider celebrity gossip a business, tabloid, rumor farm or a bunch of bullshit. In fact, it is a mixture of all. And I think that fans like it for that. Hopefully, it will soon be given the credit it is supposed to be given, not more nor less than it originally deserves.
