Is Christmas really religious?

43 Comments 15 December 2010

Christmas or Christmas Day is a holiday observed generally on December 25 to commemorate the birth of Jesus, the central figure of Christainity.

According to Wikipedia, Christmas is a day derived of Jesus himself.  However, aside from hearing of Jesus at my church or seeing the nativity scene in front of homes during Christmas, you would never know that Jesus was the true reason for the season.  TV commercials, shopping malls, and stores all display Santa Claus if anyone amongst the wreaths and lights.

I know my job has several non Protestants that take off just like I do.  I’m not sure if these people feel forced to be off or if they are just glad to have a few days off.  Come as it may, I think we’re all just glad to have the year ending and two back-to-back weeks of days off, which for many turns into an extended full two weeks off.

Ok, let’s hear it…

Should Christmas be a celebration without religious reference?
