Regular Geek Interview

5 Comments 08 November 2010

Today we are interviewing Robert Diana from RegularGeek.com.  Enjoy!

1) Who are you and what is your website about?

I am Robert Diana, a software engineer and blogger. RegularGeek is a mostly technical blog that talks about internet trends, some gadgets, social media and programming. I avoid regurgitating the news, but I will have opinions on the news with a different angle than the tech news blogs. As an example, with the iPhone you might need to look at it from the perspective of mass consumers, because early adopters would obviously like the slick design. Or there is the programming angle which most tech news blogs just don’t approach.

2) Why did you start your blog?

I had tried blogging before but it never really stuck until this blog. It started more as a way to get opinions written down about software development. However, there are experts in various technologies that can talk more in depth about those technologies. However, there was a gap in all of those blogs. They would only talk about the technologies and not about the applications of those technologies. By retaining a more customer-oriented focus and targeting how those technologies made development and the applications easier, I found my niche.

3) What has been the most explosive post on your blog and why?

The title is “What Programming Language Should I Learn?” and it went to the front page of Digg. The basic idea is that I get asked often what language a new programmer should learn. That is highly dependent upon what type of development (Windows, Web, iPhone) they want to do. The post explained why certain languages work well in
certain situations. The technical crowd on Digg either loved it or hated it, but that is typical when you discuss something that is controversial in a community. Discussing the “best” programming language is like talking about the best religion or best political party, you get all sorts of comments. Of course, I was not trying to
be controversial, I was just trying to be informative.

4) What is the craziest/most interesting exchange you’ve seen in your blog comments and why?

I would point to the “What Programming Language Should I Learn?” post again. I turned off comments a few time during the discussions because it just started to become a war of comments on why C/C++/Java was the best language, or why some obscure language would be stupid to learn. I was even called a moron because I said PHP was good for prototyping, but Facebook uses it for their site so I must have been wrong. People were getting very defensive about their choice of language as well, so people would argue among themselves. That post was the reason that I turned off comments for posts after 90 days, I was still getting  comments 9 months after the post was written.

5) What is the best article for a new reader on your blog to see? (please provide a link for inclusion in the article)

That is a very difficult question. Normally, I would say one of the most popular posts, but the most representative would probably be “Finding A Job That Fits” or the group of job trends posts which are an ongoing series looking at a few segments of the programming industry.

Which coding language do you prefer?
