It has long been taboo for employees that are lower on the ladder to speak out against those that have more power. In most occupations this behavior will get you on a long train of documentation, discipline, and possible termination. In professional sports the hierarchy is a muddled yet understood one.
In the normal work world hierarchies are determined by pay and responsibility. In sports there is an inverse relationship. In sports they players make the most money but they can’t speak out against coaches or referees. The coaches pay is in the middle. They can criticize their players but they can’t say a word about the refs. The refs receive the lowest amount of money but none of them ever speak about players or coaches.
