1) Who are you and what is your website about?

My name is Hongkiat Lim. I’m Malaysian and a permanent resident of Singapore. I am a developer, designer, avid photographer, and hard core fan of Apple. I’m also the founder of hongkiat.com – a design weblog that designers, developers, and bloggers visit regularly.

At hongkiat.com, we publish articles about stuff that revolves around designers, developers and bloggers in various formats, I.e., showcases, reviews, tutorials, tricks, how-to guides, lists and more. I believe most us play more than one role. You could be:

designer who also develops
designer who’s also a blogger
developer who loves photography
developer learning designing, or just a
blogger who wants to learn designing

The site (hongkiat.com) is here to make sure there’s something useful for everybody and caters for all.

Hongkiat.com receives about 3.1 million unique visitors/month, generating about 4.3 million pageviews/month. That’s excluding the tens of thousands of people who follow/subscribe via other channels, e.g, Facebook, RSS, Twitter, Newsletters, etc.

2) Why did you start your blog?
I used my last name for the domain, so you can probably tell I really don’t have a mega-plan when I did the first WordPress installation.

Hongkiat.com started as a personal blog, a place I rant about my boring daily job (designer). When I’m out of things to rant about, I start sharing design related tips with friends (couple of 8-10 people) who regularly visits my blog. Then I begin writing more useful types of articles like tutorials, guides, etc. With the help of social media and search engine, the site gradually grows, attracting more visitors from day to day.

3) What has been the most explosive post on your blog and why?

It’s hard to conclude or identify the most explosive post. Most of the articles are doing very well these days.

4) What is the craziest/most interesting exchange you’ve seen in your blog comments and why?

More than 80 comments are posted site-wide. I guess it’s hard to just to pick a particular discussion.

5) What is the best article for a new reader on your blog to see?

That will depends on what interests that particular new reader. I’d recommend a category instead of a specific post. E.g, if the reader is interested in web designing -he/she will like http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/category/design/,, or if he/she likes Photoshop, this will be useful http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/category/photoshop-tutorial/ .

However, if I really have to choose an article for a random new reader, I think this will be the one.
