Guantanamo Bay is a “detainment” facility operated by the U.S. in Cuba. The facility resides on one of the oldest U.S. naval bases. It is the only US Naval base that resides on communist soil. It originated in 2002 under operation of our favorite President George Bush. Although the Justice Department advised that GTMO was outside of U.S. jurisdiction, Bush continued to operate the “detainment” facility anyway.
Who is held there you might ask? Mostly Muslim militants and suspected terrorists captured in Iraq or Afghanistan.
One of President Obama’s decrees once in office was to suspend GTMO operations for 120 days and shut it down within the year. A judge at GTMO rejected this request on Jan 29, 2009 creating confusion as to how the detainees (not prisoners) would be handled. The Geneva Conventions guidelines provided grounds for violation of legal rights to detainees.
But what should be done with Guantanamo Bay… Are we wasting tax payer dollars… Do we just need a place to beat up on terrorists…
