There are several U.S. Senators in our Congressional system that have held seats for longer than most of you have been alive.  Yes, that’s right.  According to Senate.gov, the top 25 tenured Senators have held seats for 33+ years.

Topping the list is West Virginia Senator, Robert C. Byrd who has served for over 51 years.  Next behind Senator Byrd is Hawaii Senator Daniel K. Inouye and South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond who have served over 47 years each.  Are these senators maintaining such tenure because of their knowledge and expertise or are they true lame ducks holding down positions because of their connections?
