I am a proud graduate of the public school system. As smart as I thought I was, I felt the burn when I entered college. Graduating top of my high school class apparently was not enough to prepare me for a major institution.
I’ve often wondered if private school would’ve been better for me. Lets compare things side by side.
- One difference is Price/Cost. Parents need money to put their kids through private school. And sometimes lots of it. I have friends that put their child in a school that costs $30,000/year. Yikes! The median tuition price for private schools in 2008-2009 was $17,441 according to the National Association of Independent Schools.
- No bureaucratic processes. Public school systems are constantly bogged down with the need to stay in compliance, regulation or follow a process of approval. This hinders many students in the public system. Without this, private schools can offer more advanced curriculum, differentiate their material , or gear programs toward a particular religion.
- Private schools are more selective. Getting into the school may require tedious applications, interviews, essays, and tests. For some parents, this provides a sense of ease knowing their child is not in school with the local hoodlums.
- Public School teachers must be certified or working toward the state certification. Private school teachers are either strongly liked by the school officials or have a degree in a particular field or course work.
- Class size also varies from private to public. Public school tends to have overcrowded classrooms while private schools tend to have just the opposite.
Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Which do you think is better?
