The Peter Principle is an interesting concept. In a nutshell the Peter Principle says that employees will eventually get promoted to their level of incompetence. Dr. Laurence J Peter wrote an entire book on the subject. Its a rather humorous take on a very serious subject.
Its a known fact that competence isnt’ always promoted in bureaucratic companies. People seem to get promoted for a whole slew of reasons that tend to have very little to do with their performance (tenure, office politics, etc). At the end of the day this hurts everyone involved. It often seems that the smart people are stuck doing the actual work while the idiots get promoted and run the ship.
Is the Peter Principle in play at your job or do competent people win out?
