LinkedIn recommendations…my oh my. LinkedIn is one of the many social media websites taking over the internet. LinkedIn serves many relevant purposes:
- Business Networking
- Re-connecting with work colleagues
- Providing Company Information
- Creating Target Lists for your business
- Recommending other people
In my humble opinion LinkedIn recommendations are one of the few things that devalue the site. I’ve seen people who couldn’t clean a white board with a wet towel receive multiple glowing reviews on the site. The sad thing about it is this…people use this trash to make hiring and promotion decisions.
I think LinkedIn should remove recommendations from the site altogether. They add no value and a good portion of them are flat out lies.

I’m sure there are a few truthful people on the site, but there are plenty of bogus recommendations on the site.
The bogus recommendations FAR OUTWEIGH the good ones. I’ve seen people who literally can’t sum columns in excel have recommendations that talk about their advanced skills in the technology department. I’ve seen people who are hated by everyone they’ve ever managed be called everything except Sun Tzu. Bottom line: That part of the site is bogus shawty.
I think the linkedin UI is horrible and I only visit the site to confirm a “professional network” invitation.
The system is inherently flawed because the person who is being recommended controls the content. With that in mind you can’t expect to view truly objective feedback about a person and their abilities.
Since I’ve began hiring people I’ve never looked at their linkedin recommendations and I never will.
No one “linked” to you is going to leave you a bad recommendation.
Umm no! No one links to people that would leave a negative recommendation. Plus I know people that solicit recommendations which doesn’t make it bad, but most friends would not say “No, I don’t want to recommend you”.
