Spotting – allowing another person to assist you with weights in the gym.  Spotting usually occurs when you do not possess the power to complete a set of reps at the selected weight.  The main purpose of the spotter is to ensure your safety.

Spotting is common behavior among friends in the gym.  Spotting simultaneously requires a squelching of the ego and a breach of your personal space.  That is why spotting is an uncommon behavior among strangers in the gym.  Apparently, people prefer to have somewhat familiar sweat fall on their face instead of totally random sweat.

Imagine yourself at the gym.  You want to move up in weight on the bench press, but your workout partner isn’t there.  You know that you need a spot.  Would you allow a stranger to help you out?
