Should Athletes Receive College Scholarships

No one on this planet can argue against the following statement:  college tuition increases every year.  The rate of increase has outpaced the rate of income increase in the US for some time now.  Students at premier institutes can rack up home mortgage level debt ($100k) trying to get an education.  Financial aid can help but it rarely puts a substantial dent in the overall price tag.

Financial stress has led to increased dropout rates, depression, social anxiety, and even depression in students.  A balance of $76,894 and no source of income can break even the mightiest among us.  There appears to be no end in site  for the out of control tuition costs at our schools.

There is a segment of students that don’t have to worry with tuition…scholarship athletes.  Scholarship athletes receive full rides to party, lift weights, chase balls, and flex for TV cameras.  The majority of the knuckleheads at my alma mater did nothing more than cheat on tests, work out, play ball, and move on to a meaningless life.  Colleges invest upwards of $15,000 per year in each scholarship athlete, while leaving other students in the ocean with no swimming gear.

In my opinion the money that colleges spend on scholarship athletes is a waste plain and simple.  There may be a select few that disagree.
