How much would you pay for golf clubs?

At first glance golf doesn’t look like an expensive sport.  In order to play you need the following items:

  • A bag
  • A set of balls (more balls if you aren’t that great)
  • A pair of shoes
  • A set of clubs

In this case appearances are deceiving.  A standard bag costs $50-$100.  The range on ball prices is just plain silly.  You can’t get a decent pair of shoes for $40.

Golf clubs are in a category all their own.  The flimsiest full set of clubs that Wal-Mart has to offer is $100.  That’s right $100 for a few poles with heads on them.  A high quality set of Taylor Mades, Nikes, or Ping clubs can easily leave your pocket $1,500 lighter.

They say a good craftsmen needs good tools.  How much are you willing to pay for a good set of golf tools?

    Golf bores me.

In my opinion the super expensive clubs are a sham. You don’t really need them unless you are playing at the professional level. Chipping with a $150 pitching wedge won’t help you if you swing like Paul Bunyon.

While the layperson would believe that clubs don’t make a difference they do but only to a certain extent. If you aren’t breaking 100 stick with what you got, but as you get better you’ll need the ball to curve and stop in certain situations; more expensive balls and clubs can help you do that. Plus newer expensive drivers actually help straighten mis-hits.

You most always get what you pay for…

How much money did you take home from the masters last year Tiger?

Speaking first hand, I can say the “better” more expensive clubs do improve your game. As my own drive shot became more powerful, so did my slice. I practiced with a few more high end drivers and the slice went away. Just a shame that it took a $400 club to straighten my slice.

I didn’t know golf was so expensive. No wonder most of a certain creed of people stuck with basketball and football for so long.
