Using Race to determine admission?

I remember finishing up my senior year of high school.  I was at the top of the African American crowd in my school.  I aced the SAT, ACT, and ASVAB.  We had career day and several schools came in to visit and meet with us.  There were several representatives from Alabama State Tuskegee University, Florida A & M, Alabama A & M, Bethune Cookman, Clark Atlanta, Morehouse, Morris Brown, Savannah State, Alcorn State, and Mississippi Valley State.  All of these schools wanted to speak to me and a few of my friends that were admirable athletes (none of which who were in the top 25 percentile of our class).

My other friends (the light skinned crowd) were targets of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Michigan, Duke, Stanford, Texas, and even Cornell.  I attempted to speak to these representatives, but they wouldn’t make eye contact.

Mom and I had a long conversation about it.  She explained that the above mentioned schools ,sadly enough, have a crowd of ethnicity to maintain.  Doesn’t make it right, but it happens.  So my question to you is do you think it’s right for schools to try and maintain their balance of students?  Are Historic Black Colleges still historically black if the student base changes to majority White, Hispanic, Asian, or European.  Will Ivy League schools suffer if their sports programs begins to turn out future NBA and NFL Hall of Famers?

Should colleges use race as a way to determine admission?
