President is powerful person or figurehead?

The President of the United States is the head of state and head of government of the United States and the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces.  The President also has the ability to grant pardons and reprieves.  From where I stand, that makes the presidential position an awesomely powerful one.  He can do ALL that and I doubt he would get a speeding ticket.

But is the president really as powerful as he seems?  Some believe we select the president just to have a speaker for the country, a face to show up at the conferences and world peace sessions.  If we really dig into it, it is easy to see that Congress controls things or even big business (i.e. AIG bailout as they receive million dollar bonuses).

But I’m not the expert…You are…

Is the President a truly powerful person or just a figurehead?
