I totally disagree.. I'm glad that you have spoiled children who had an x box and ps3 but in my eyes a child doesn't need these things…. i was spanked when i was a child and all 5 of my siblings were also spanked. I'm not saying we got lashings but i see that though this i was taught respect and what is means to be a good citizen in society. most children who are spoiled and whose parents thought spanking were child abuse or at least most i ever went to school with are still living with their parents no nothing of the real world or are in the real world and manage to find themselves in the lower end of life as where they are no where near successful. most people who dis agree with spanking were either abused themselves (which at least they have a reason to feel against because sadly abused people are most likely to become abusive or have never been spanked a day in there life and therefor they do not realize that the outcome is not abuse but mainly respect for yourself and others.

I agree. It sounds like the psychological aspect was big with your mother. Did it limit the number of spankings she had to give?

This is not an easy question for me to answer. My mother was a big believer in spanking, but she never crossed the lines that most people would call abuse. She never left a bruise on us. She never spanked when she was angry. She never spanked us on the bare butt. She did use the back of a hairbrush and a belt a couple of times to spank me, but she was always careful when she did it. I couldn’t accuse her of going overboard there.

What she did was more along the lines of psychological abuse for those who believe in such a thing. For example, she believed spankings were less about inflicting pain than causing the child being spanked to feel ashamed.

When one of us got spanked she usually did the spanking in the living room, so that all the kids would see it. She never rushed into things and she would usually tell us during dinner that someone was getting a spanking afterwards. It always made for a very quiet dinner. Even though she never spanked us “bare”, she’d always take down our pants, or in my sister’s case at least once, pull off her skirt. We’d always get spanked in our underwear. Often that was the worst part of it for me. Having to stand in front of her, my younger brother, and older sister in my jockey shorts. I think it was worse for my sister though having to wear her panties in front of her two brothers.

She’d take her time and it could involve a lot of standing and waiting for her. After a spanking, she typically make us get up after bending over her lap, and apologize for our actions. I’d usually be crying and those were really awful moments, with tears running down my cheeks, standing there in my white briefs, just wanting to go to my room quickly.

Anyway, my experiences make me look at spanking more carefully. I won’t say all spanking is abusive. However, there can be plenty of abuse without even laying a hand on a child.

I was only spanked a few times growing up. I probably should have had more spankings. But, I was well behaved most of the time for fear of getting spanked.

Spanking IS abuse – it sure as hell abused me! I am a 56 yr old grandmother who was spanked by hand and leather slipper as a child and from the first smack – I was terrified, and traumatised. I was taught not to hit ever – and suddenly this 'loving' parent thrashed me and hurt me. I learned nothing but fear, hate, that my parents didn't love me – actions sure do speak louder than words, that parents DO lie [the must because they told me they loved me and they obviously didn't], they taught me might equals right and if you are big or an adult you can do anything and get away with it. I learned that even if I told the truth I was going to be hurt. I was totally alienated by it. If a child knows that you are displeased and that they did wrong the lesson is learned. You should teach children right from wrong so they can work it out for themselves and not just react to not do something 'in case they get caught' .

NO child should be spanked – it IS hitting and therefore IS abuse. I can't hit my husband, the neighbour or his dog and I shouldn't be able to hit a child!
Years ago wife beating and slavery were the norm as was raping and buggering 7 yr olds in Ancient Rome! We don't do it now as it is seen for what it is – ABUSE. And hitting ANY other human or animal is ABUSE. Age doesn't matter!
