Polly: Many grapple with how they were brought up and so if a child was smacked, shouted at, bashed, hurled, shook, caned, belted, pushed, pulled …. they simply copy – and that is sad. It makes for a very unhappy childhood when a childhood should be a wonderful experience especially being able to go into their home without the thought that they may be hurt.

I personally think you're over dramatizing the situation. I got spankings as a kid and I'm fine. I agree with you if we are talking about abused kids, but a little but smack here and there never hurt anybody.

FYI - My unborn kids would be so envious of the paradise that is your home.

Marcus, I think what is definitely needed are courses in schools on 'how to be parents and how to reprimand children.' It seems to me there are many who go to school then leave and never really grow up before they too have children and then they just do not know how to handle this little person. Many grapple with how they were brought up and so if a child was smacked, shouted at, bashed, hurled, shook, caned, belted, pushed, pulled .... they simply copy - and that is sad. It makes for a very unhappy childhood when a childhood should be a wonderful experience especially being able to go into their home without the thought that they may be hurt.

It is interesting to note, that around 85 percent of polled professionals and executives in America were spanked as children - while over 70 percent of prison inmates weren't. I myself was spanked as a child: with the hand, a belt, and even with a short piece of 2x4 lumber [on one occasion] by my father. I ended up far closer to him than my mother and didn't suffer for the wear and tear!

I cut school once, lied to my parents once, and could be silenced by just an disgruntled look by my father. Nor, was this unusual for my well-disciplined generation. Meanwhile, I see dozens of brats now throwing tantrums everyday... and they all have one thing in common. Their parents: threaten, cajole, placate, beg, and then bribe them to behave Strange, isn't it?

It has been my experience to notice that some parents can't even hold a conversation on the street anymore, because their uppity teenagers won't let them.... So tragic!

Polly, can I ask how many children you have raised?

Your comments are very disturbing and unfounded. Again, you are giving your opinion. I have amazing kids that come to me and talk to me about anything and everything.

I don't think the chatting to my neighbor's kid is working. He still kicks my son even though they tell him why he shouldn't. He's a bully. I'm glad I taught my kids to be kind, gentle and loving toward others.

Polly

You're a much nicer person than anyone that raised me. I wasn't afforded the luxury of an explanation until I was about 13. It worked fine for me as I learned what behaviors were off limits. I'm not one who enjoys rear end pain.

I'd never condone a slap in the face b/c its just plain disrespectful.

<a href="#co It teaches a child – ‘if you don’t like something then hitting is the answer.’

That's a pretty bold generalization. When I was hit I learned to stop the behavior that caused the beating.

To answer your other questions. My pop beat the brakes off of me and we were like best friends when I grew up.

I have no children, but if they are anything like me they'll get a spanking or two (or 300). :-)

Marcus - It is just wrong to hit a child. It is not necessary. It is much more sensible to tell a child not to do something and to say why. 'Don't do that because .... ' works much better than any slap. A slap doesn't teach someone to be better or to act better. It teaches a child - 'if you don't like something then hitting is the answer.' So what is achieved?

When a child is hit then they live in fear and that is not living at all. It doesn't teach respect it forms hate - it doesn't stop someone from doing something it gives birth to slyness and the need not to get caught.

Why would a child or young adult confide in a parent who slaps or hits out at them?

Would any parent who slaps their children ever really know their children?

Be gentle with your children Marcus they are a wonderful gift. :)

Well, my son came to me and asked my permission to date now that he is 18 and he turned a very pretty girl down due to a clash in religious views. I'm not saying my kids won't make bad choices, Marcus. But on my dime and my time, their choices are limited.
I completely take your comment with a grain of salt, especially since none of those college girls were mine. lol

Missy: You know I don’t let my kids date until they are out of high school? They have never given me crap about it. I’m very strict, and it doesn’t take a belt.

I have no kids so feel free to take this with a grain of salt. I knew 3 girls in college who couldn't date in high school. Let's just say their parents wouldn't have been too proud of their behavior.

Don't shoot the messenger ;-)

Emcee, it is a slap in my face to have someone tell me my kids are going to be bullies if I spank them when none of them are. I was spanked and I am not one. My husband was spanked and he never was. I can go on and on and on. Now, I know someone who was beat with a frying pan by his mother and he is a bully.

Low testing sample...lol Love that. :)
