When is Spanking Considered Child Abuse?

12 Comments 02 March 2010

spanking

As a child I performed several acts that resulted in a blistered behind.  At the time I thought I had it rough.  On a hot summer day my entire outlook on the situation changed.

I was in my front yard minding my own business when I heard a shriek.  A buddy of mine burst out of his house and fell down a full flight of stairs.  His mother came out of the house wielding a belt and screaming.  Before he could regain his footing her belt ripped through the skin on his shoulder 3 more times.  After 15 more seconds of abuse she relented.  He lay in his front yard with blood streaming out of his back and tears in his eyes.

Needless to say, I no longer felt abused.

So when is the line crossed?  When does punishment become brutality?

When does a spanking become child abuse?

I fell victim to numerous “whoopins” all brought on by myself I might add. NEVER did I end up bleeding after the affair. Once the blood shows up…you’re doing it wrong.

Let the punishment fit the crime.

I have been on the receiving end of thrashings many times. However, I cannot recall blood showings. Blood definitely is a call for abuse.

LOL @ the vote for “there is no such thing”. Where are the barbarians when you need them in the comment section?

I guess my comment was too honest and not barbaric enough.

It is child abuse when the baby has black eyes and bruises to the rib cage!!!!

It is abuse when there is blood and/or a hospital visit involved. My mom also had a strict policy of no hitting about the head. That was abuse to her.

Whoopings make for successful people like myself. I grew up with siblings that all felt the wrath of mom every know and again and it led us all to be successful college grads with great careers.

So you would be jailbait as a 45 year old if your mother never spanked you?

I am a mother of 4. My kids all got spanked. My daughter just got a swat tonight for an offense she keeps repeating that nothing else seems to stop her from doing it. One swat on her thigh and my neighbor noticed the pink mark. It was gone in 15 minutes. I am not talking about beating a child. But we have spared the rod more with our third than with the others, and she is the one that tries to get away with the most. By the way, my oldest was just valedictorian of his class and admits he has needed spanked during his life. It wasn’t daily. He was a happy, well-rounded child. Really – get off your high horses. I’ve seen abuse. A TRUE spanking is not even close to abuse.
