When is a Divorce Payout Too High

Divorce payments have been known to bring people to their knees.  Losing 40% of your net worth tends to have that impact on people.  Celebrity divorce settlements draw much attention because of headline grabbing dollar amounts:

  • Michael Douglas – $45 Million
  • Steven Spielberg – $100 Million
  • Craig McCaw – $460 Million

These amounts are staggering even for the ultra rich.  For a person living a regular lifestyle that 50% hit can mean the difference between having a place to stay and living with your mother.

There has to be a point when the payout is too much.  What is that point?

What amount is too much in divorce payments?

Any amount is too much. You’re not married, there is no obligation to provide for the other person. This “lifestyle I have become accustom to” bullshit is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. It’s a lifestyle you have become accustom to , not a lifestyle you deserve to continue.

For women (or men) that support a significant other, there is a point to be made that this support led to some of their good fortune. Whether just moral support or support to the extent of staying home with kids, handling finances, providing healthy dinners, buying necessary items, etc.

Now I do agree that the “lifestyle I have become accustom to” is a high horse that many people need to step down from. If you got up on that horse because you met me, and you chose to get down off my horse, then you should go back down there where you came from and leave me alone.

I agree with BigAl on this one. You’re an adult so you need to move on and support yourself. PERIOD.

Support? Staying home with the kids? Your significant other should do that b/c that is there job, b/c it is the right thing to do. Remember they are staying home with the kids they created too, just b/c you are out making money doesn’t she deserves a cut when it’s over. Now I realize she/he may have lost her/his skills…if they have been out of the market/school for a while. But 20% of my income might be all you gonna get til you’re on ya own.

Right. If you spouse stays at home, they have been “leaching” off of you the entire marriage, why are they entitled to do so when the marriage is over?

Agreed, they are staying home with kids they created also. But these children spend more than 50% of their time with the mother. With that said, that means that mom is accounting for dad’s 50% also. This is the argument made when things go sour and mom wants her cut after departure. And the court systems love to calculate interest. Go figure…

Marriage is not considered “leaching” my friend. If you asked for the hand of a dead beat broke wanna-be baby mama, then you wanted to be a “Sugar Daddy”. Sorry.

She treated you like a 401K. Put in a little bit, waited until she was fully invested and then cashed you out. Sorry again. Pay up.

I know it isn’t leaching in the strict definition of the word. That’s why I put “leaching” in quotations. I was being facetious.

    Oh…

Let me flipt the script on the woman hating. Why is it that Halle Berry had to pay Eric Benet alimony for cheating on her after their divorce in his “sex addictive” state? He didn’t lose his “skills”. He still has a voice and can continue to make music. He should have still been able to support his daughter. He is just a sorry excuse for a man “leaching” off of her. That is pathetic.

You got me. If I was a judge or jury member, his ass would have got nothing, especially for the cheating.

Agreed. And didn’t Kelis receive child support and alimony to the sum of around $40,000/month for cheating on Nas?
