What makes a person an alcoholic?

drunk

Alcoholism has been researched for years without a clear answer of “why” people become alcoholics.  One known fact is that it is attributed to those who drink too much.  People have had drink after drink after drink for over 20 years before invading alcoholism.  Others have become subdued after the first sip.

So let’s begin at the beginning.  Alcohol is a drug.  All drugs can be addictive, thus leading to alcohol being the cause of alcoholism.  Next you may wonder why start drinking at all.

It helps me cope with problems.

Work is driving me insane!

Drinking is cool.

It keeps me from getting sick.

I don’t have a problem.  I don’t drink hard liquor.

My friends do it too.

Most people justify these as reasons for drinking.  These are merely excuses.  Alcohol is a Depressant, a Central Nervous System Depressant to be exact thus creating a “pseudo” feeling.  Whether a happy feeling, calm feeling, excited feeling, or superman feeling, it is a false feeling that leads persons to want to feel this feeling more and more.

But since the book has not been closed, you tell me…Why are you a drunkard?

What makes a person an alcoholic?

Funny how alcohol is the only “disease” you get yelled at for having. Nobody ever says “Frank!!! Get the fuck out of my house you cancerous bastard!!!”

From my experiences it has a ton to do with a person’s gene pool. It seems that if dad gets the ball rolling the sons will follow.

Alcoholism is largely a coping mechanism–coping for WHAT, you might ask. Several things:

    1. Stress

    2. Pain (yes, beer has been scientifically proven to kill pain)

    3. An overactive frontal cortex (hence the need for calming–sometimes to the point of sedation)

    4. Weak bone density (again, science has proven beer contains all kinds of silicon, which helps bones strengthen)

The more one needs one or more of the above treatments, the more one tends to self-medicate…and a 12-pk. of beer is cheaper than therapy or prescription meds!

  4. Wenchypoo says:

I forgot to address the “gene pool” thing: Once a family member finds his/her own cure for the above afflictions, the LEARNED BEHAVIOR is usually picked up by other family members as a way of dealing with the same afflictions or inherited ones, such as an overactive frontal cortex–brain patterns ARE inherited. A tendency toward weak bones or inability to handle stress well are INHERITED but can be conquered with the right training.

Chronic pain can also be lessened with “brain training” and the right anti-inflammatory diet…if that doesn’t work, there’s always a fallback beer, meds, or suicide plan.

Frank probably picked that drink up by choice. I don’t think people say, “hey, let me get a shot of cancer”.

    Y chromosomes cause alcoholism. LOL!!!

If its a “disease”, as so many claim, then he doesn’t have much of a choice.

Like any drug, you make choices.

If cancer is my fate, then so be it. I can CHOOSE not to drink.

I dont think you appreciate my humor, so I’ll explain it. I DON’T think alcoholism is a “disease”. Note the quotation marks ( I haven’t figured out italics yet)I agree with you that you are responsible for what you put in your body. There are people out there that think this is a disease and that they can’t help but drink. That is complete bullshit to me. Hence the earlier joke. If it really was a disease, would you be ridiculed and belittle for having it? No, because it is not a disease it’s a choice you make like any other drug.

Are you as dumb as I think you are?

I enjoy a good laugh; keep em coming. Italics are done by including brackets (greater than/less than) around verbiage with a forward slash on your closing brackets Drink Up!

No, I am not your father. Michael Vick killed your father in Virginia.

First off – you people are hilarious. Thanks :-)

Now……alcoholism is caused by people who fail to build their earthly ways on something stronger than a drug in a bottle. Blaming your job, talking about cortexes, and bone density problems are absolutely absurd. You drink because you encountered something you can’t cope with, deal with, or find an answer to. The “drunk” feeling is your escape from reality.

As an alternative, I would suggest better friends, possibly a church family, and a life evaluation.

I know plenty of people who are drunk on Saturday night and in church on Sunday night.

Then their reason for being there is not legitimate.

Don’t church folk toast it up at communion?

They have grape juice for the 12 steppers

No, we sip of bread and juice. (Representing the body and blood of Jesus)
