There are over a million job descriptions in the world. Mechanics, strippers, engineers, athletes, politicians, judges, and longshoremen all have their place in the world. At first glance these occupations appear to have nothing in common. The skill sets vary widely (I’ve never wanted to see a mechanic strip), but there are certain elements of a career that each have.
- Pay – every job has some type of salary
- Work/Life Balance – nobody wants to work ALL day
- Opportunity for Advancement – Do you want to do the same job forever?
- Community Involvement – Does your company value the community?
- Personal Development – Does your company invest in your development?
Each person weighs these values differently. Which is the most important to you?

I only work so I can afford my hobbies and vacations…and retirement.
No job, unless you yearn to do your job or are changing the world, is worth more than 8 hours a day no matter the pay. I grind for 8 hours doing something I kinda enjoy with people who don’t get on my nerves so that I can live a nice life, relax on the weekends, not answer emails and get away when I need to.
No emails on the weekends? Fantasy land!!
I 100% agree. It’s really not worth having your life and well being ground into fine dust unless you really enjoy it. When you die and dirt is thrown on your face nobody is going to remember the TPS report you put together on Saturday morning.
What do I value most in my career? Don’t know yet…HELP!
So You Want To Be a Banquet Manager
If it’s an emergency I have a phone number, if you sent an email it’s obviously not very important.
I get phone calls asking me why I haven’t responded to emails 1hr after they’re sent.
Ask them, “If it’s so important, why did you email me in the first place?”
Last I checked, screen shots don’t translate well on a phone call.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say your job sucks.
WOW! And I thought my job was bad. I’ve never gotten screen shots on the weekend. If I did, they were received on Monday morning when business was back in session.
I tend to value the money more than most. I feel as all the other things, I can control. My salary is at the whim of the “man’s” budget. If I don’t like my position, I will go get another. If they don’t support the community, I’ll join a community outreach program. If I can’t balance MY life, who can?
Must be a thick limb if it hasn’t broken.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
It is. I sleep on it while you are answering emails at obscene hours of the night and weekend.
You are whats wrong with the world.
I got here at 7am and I MIGHT leave by 6pm. Staying this late doesn’t bother me if I know ahead of time, b/c I’ll just do my evening stuff in the morning and come in later. Telling me as I’m about to walk out the door that I need to stay and debug units is NOT cool. Thus is the life of new product development. :-/
I go in at 9, leave before 6, and get absolutely no contact on weekends. No one cries about their inability to reach me on weekends because … lmao, thats what junior developers are for.
What? I have VPs emailing me on the weekend. I guess your company is much bigger than mine. We’re all pretty close and if something isn’t working, ALL of the developers hear about it.
