How have music downloads affected the music industry

If you have a computer, and are between the ages of 12 and 40, I would bet that you’ve downloaded music either legally or illegally.  Has your conscience ever kicked in to question the effects of your downloads on the artists that work those long nights to produce the musical melodies that you enjoy?

There have been several artists to communicate their thoughts on the effects of downloads on their money.  50 Cent blamed part of his latest flop on leakage and illegal downloads (which I don’t think was the case).  However, Soulja Boy proudly boasts that leaking his own album helped him achieve platinum status.

But enough of these minds.  What do the Survey Magnet minds think?

How has the ability to download music impacted the music industry?

Thank you for the I don’t care option. I used to hate buying CD’s because I didn’t want to pay ~$13 for 1 or 2 songs I liked and bunch I was unsure of and stupid fucking skits. I have no problem paying per song and knowing I am getting quality.

And I thought Artists made more money off of tours than record sales and record companies make their money off of album sales. If that is the case, I would want as much of my music to spread as possible so people would want to see me in concert.

Artists make more money off of tours now because of music downloads. In the golden age an artist could make a good album, sell it, and book 1 or 2 tours to make good money. Now an artist has to make a great album, sell a few copies, and tour for 8 months to make that same money.

In my opinion music downloads have ruined the quality of music that we receive. The artists (rightfully so) are trying to make a hit record to keep the cash registers ringing. Making a quality album has become a secondary focus.

I don’t download music but I know that illegal downloads hurt more than help. I am a die hard CD person so I will continue to purchase the CD. If there is only one song or two that I like then I will just listen to it on the radio. They will undoubtedly play it every hour on the hour.

I think the downloads help. Efforts of artists to streamline business with downloads have prompted the “mixtape” explosion which are available on several musical download syndicates. Mixtapes offer many samples of music that people can listen to that normally do not make the artists any money but do wonders for their publicity. i.e. Dewayne Carter Jr. and Aubrey Graham.

    Who?

Sorry. Street Names: Lil Wayne and Drake.

  10. BigAl says:

I still only recognize one of those names and I couldn’t point either of them out in a line up.

    Typical R&B/Rapper/HipHop/BET Award show dudes.

I’m just saying, why do they have to be in a line up?

That’s typically how people are presented to you when you have to identify them…I’m just saying.

Music downloads (and now movie downloads) have reduced the average viewer proceeds to $1 per head (or less). If not enough people LIKE the music or movie, even less revenue is generated than before downloads or rentals existed.

This is the race to the bottom: slashing costs for production, just like every other industry.

Did you know there technically is no more Hollywood? “Hollywood” has moved to wherever the movie tax credits are highest, or where the production costs are lowest. Hollywood is now just a concept, and no longer an actual place.
