All of our lives the path to success has been described like this:

  1. Go to school
  2. Make good grades
  3. Get a good job in your field

In today’s world that path has changed.  On many occassions people go to school, get good grades, and find themselves looking for the first job that will pay a decent wage.  Unfortunately, this means the job may not use the skills that a person has paid for in college.  To some people this is a waste of money, while some people consider it a fact of life.  In my opinion it is a waste of time and resources to pay for an education and then not use it (but that’s just my opinion).

What do  you think?  Do you use the skills you paid for in college?

Are you using the skills you paid for in college?

I use my education. I didn’t graduate with a BA in management and go on to become a part time barista at Starbucks.

  2. Emcee says:

I’m an engineer but not technically in my field of study. I think I learned more useful stuff while at college that was beyond actual education, hard things to quantify.

  3. Derrick says:

I feel that my skills are somewhat in use at the job but not to the extent of which I would prefer.

  4. Marcus says:

The people at my job can’t begin to fathom the raw processing power of my neurotransmitters.

    So in a word…no.

Maybe you think you’re smarter than everyone else but in turn you are not…

On the contrary. I “get it in” as the young folk say.

    The proper definition is this:

To possess superior intelligence, ability, and courage in an office setting. Preferably a setting in which others are deficient in that area.

Example. BigAl has to run TPS reports at Donuts R Us Corporate while the other analysts browse the web and manage projects. BigAl is not gettin’ it in.

And here I thought urbandictionary was the best source on youthful slang, when in fact, it was Marcus from surveymagnet…/sarcasm

Why would you accept a position where your power remains to contained? Why not wait on a company that wants to unleash the beast in your brain?

My job is interesting in that I actually do some of the stuff I learned in college. Unfortunately some of my coworkers went to some other school where they taught them crap and I’m always fixing it.

Maybe I should say I’m using 15% of what I went to school for.

  15. Wenchypoo says:

Since I went to college (but didn’t finish–too bored) to be a financial planner (this was the early days of financial planning), what I did manage to learn I do use…as a housewife. I plan retirement, taxes, do accounting, and even use algebra to help me determine the lowest prices of foods per pound, ounce, or some other measure.

Since being out of college, I feel I’ve learned a lot more OUT than I did IN, even though I never finished. I never stopped learning, even though I quit going to campus–you should see my book shelves!
