Religious Peer Pressure

Peer pressure is an immense force.  There isn’t a person on this earth who hasn’t had to deal with it.   As kids we beg for toys and trinkets, as teenagers we  lie about their sex lives, and as adults we stay late at work to fit in.

Most people don’t have the resolve to resist peer pressure.  Its not really that difficult to figure out why.  What can you really say to things like:

  • Know when judgement day rolls around…you can’t say you weren’t told…either you are going to hear one of two things….Depart from me, I know you not…or well done thy good and faithful servant.
  • The bible states that the wages of sin is death.
  • And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you!

That’s a scary set of bullet points if I ever read one.

People who resist peer pressure are often ostracized from their peer group.  Nobody wants to live a life of solitude…:(.

Peer pressure to attend church is a force like none other on the planet.   Eternal fire and pain is a pretty strong motivator to hang with the right crowd.  Oftentimes this force is used as fuel for individuals to attend church.

I never have and I never will agree with using peer pressure to bring someone to a religion.    What do you think?

Do Religions Use Peer Pressure to Encourage Attendance?

Peer pressure is just one of their many tactics.  The threat of eternal fire is used by some who like to say, “Well, what is believing going to hurt?  If you’re wrong, at least you won’t get burned forever for it.  If you’re right, no harm done.”  This is the equivalent of me saying “What harm is belief in Zeus going to do.  If you’re wrong at least a falcon won’t come and eat your liver EVERY FRIGGIN’ DAY!!!!  If not, no harm done.”  I don’t know whats worse, being burned and hot with skin that stays on eternally and nerves that are never damaged so I constantly feel it or having my liver constantly eaten and having to feel each and every tear through my flesh.

LOL, I will say there were a group of people in college that were part of a cult that used all types of aggressive peer pressure to recruit a number of their members.  How many times have I seen the group of 7 people knocking on some kid’s door talking about having a bible talk?

To pressure and to guilt someone into the church should be a sin.

I agree. Peer pressure sucks no matter where it is.

I’ve never seen or experienced such peer pressure. This was news to me. I was always taught that “…” = death, and “…” = eternal life.

  5. Aberk says:

I don’t think I have ever experienced a lot of peer pressure when it comes to this. I usually tell people that I am not a very religious person and that is the end of it.

You know threats or teachings like that can be taken a pressure…”if you don’t have GOD you’re sinnin’ and that’s death, now you don’t want that now do you?”

    Sounds like PP to me

Those Truth.com commercials tell everyone that people die from smoking and illustrate it also. Do you take those commercials as threats also?

Yeah, they are information that tell you of consequences. Same thing, still peer pressure/threats.

The people from the Truth.com commercials don’t call you on your cell phone, eat thanksgiving dinner with you, or stop you in the parking lot.

And we’re forgetting the key difference between religious peer pressure versus truth.com commercials.  Truth.com is presenting you with stated, actual facts from decades of observation.

Since the only thing we have on all the religious groups is faith and there have been no accounts of dead people coming back describing the details of heaven or hell, we have to imagine these scenarios based on descriptions written by people over a thousand years ago.  In the end, we have no actual observation, no causality or anything to substantiate the threat of fire and brimstone or any other woes.  These threats are the equivalent of “If you don’t invite evil fairies to your daughter’s baby shower, one of them will curse her to DIE on her 16th birthday.”

Well if they went to eternal fire and hell…….How would you expect to see and talk to them?????? Case and point proven.

Everyone that smoked and died didn’t die from smoking. If you believe in that “fact and observation”, you’re just giving edutainment speeches.

Got any pictures of that eternal fire and hell or are you really talking about the Valley of Hinnom in the ancient valley of Jerusalem?
