Modern Warfare 2 Civilian Killing Mission

I’ll be the first to admit that I love video games.  I play sports games, guitar hero, action adventure games, and first person shooters.  A few years ago I began playing Call of Duty because a friend of mine had it.  I played it, I liked it, and like millions of other gamers I eagerly anticipated the release of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.

My stomach is strong so its hard for me to be shocked.  The video games I’ve played involve sex, gang violence, murder, and drug usage.  With that under my belt I was sure that I’d seen it all.  I was wrong.

One of the earlier missions in Call of Duty MW2 involves the killing of civilians at an airport (see the video above).  In the mission you stroll through an airport chopping down civilians with machine guns and automatic rifles. Once you open fire a chorus of screams, bullets, and broken glass ring out.  The carnage (and the lives of about 100 make believe citizens) is over about 4 minutes after it starts.

Needless to say, the Activision team has caught hell for this mission.

Is the "No Russian" Mission Over the Line?

I’ll be first.  This is just a game and its highlighting one of the horrible things about war that people don’t want to admit to.  The mowing down of innocent civilians by military personnel.  I mean, do insurgents wear uniforms?  Nope …

Just ask the IDF about identifying insurgents.

Oh, we shouldn’t make games about it.  LOL, all that does is highlight the terms of modern warfare.  Sad, but true.  One of the things about video games is realism.  Eliminating the elimination of civilians is ignoring the true reality of the nature of terrorism and how you have to combat it militarily.

I do agree that it is just a game. Activision acted in poor taste on this one though. If a family member of mine was lost in a terrorist attack I’d be fairly pissed at this.

    not poor taste, realism.

I do agree, it’s realism and poor taste. But people have to be able to separate video games from real life and that is the only reason it’s okay.

Weak minded individuals allow a game to confuse them about real life.
