Are Non-Believers Smarter Than Religious People?

The following text is quoted directly from www.about.com .

Most studies show a strong correlation between education and atheism: the more education a person has, the less religious they become and even less theistic. Some religious theists, seeking a way to attack atheism, try to use this against atheists by claiming that atheists’ intelligence is a reason for their disbelief not because they really do know more, but because they are too arrogant. Atheists, according to this myth, don’t want to admit the existence of a god smarter than they are.

I know a lot of incredibly smart people. When I think about this quote 3 extremely intelligent people come to mind.  They are in fact the 3 smartest people that I know.  Coincidentally, all of them are atheist/non-believers/agnostics.

Is this a mere coincidence or a fact of life?

Yes. We are not sheep blindly following a Sheppard. We have questions about what we see and cannot see. Questions not simply answered by faith, trust or belief.

  2. Derrick says:

I don’t think smart and religion have any type of correlation. That’s just like saying smart people are always taller than six foot.

  3. miked says:

LMAO, I’m on the fence because I know a variety of dumbass believers and non-believers.  Sure I know MORE dumbass believers than non-believers but I think thats just a numbers game.  Then again, maybe bigal is right because now that I think about it, the only dumbass non-believers I know are those who turn atheism into a religion thus inheriting all of the crazed characteristics of the religious nutjobs.

Eh, the non-believers are only smarter than the believers because they don’t bother themselves with things like souls, existence beyond what is currently life, and the like.  Its an Occam’s Razor type view of life but eh, you get more time to devote to things you can actually understand than with “magic”.

  4. Emcee says:

I can’t really say the non-believers are smarter in general than the believers. When it comes to empirical evidence (this is called logic to some) to existence of things (religious or not) it seems the non-believers are way ahead. Faith is such a touchy thing…and that’s exactly what religion is based on FAITH.

LOL…silly rabbit. It takes a life rooted in logic to stand up and say this whole deal doesn’t make sense to me. Logic = intelligence.

Logic = reasoning. Reasoning is what you believe is right. doesn’t make it right silly jack rabbit.
Intelligence = wisdom from past experiences or creativity.
    Logic <> intelligence

Don’t you use the intelligence when reasoning? Thus strengthening your logic…so does your faith play into your logic or intelligence?

  8. Burmonster says:

I love studies based on correlation. Why not just put this at the top of their paper; “Hey, we are going to jump to a conclusion based upon observation. There is no point in reading this because our ‘conclusion’ will not actually conclude anything.” At least that would save me the time.

  9. Derrick says:

Nope. I use logic when reasoning. Faith can be logic, but faith is more so just your belief.

Strong logic is rooted in intelligence. Strong reasoning is rooted in emotion. Get your act together. LOL @ you for making up a definition of intelligence. LMAO.

The answer to that question is no.

You just said logic = reasoning, so how can you use logic to reason when logic is reasoning. So if your faith is logic based, how did you reason that it was correct? I’m pretty sure you’ll need some intelligence in there, to sort out the rights and wrongs.

  13. miked says:

I’m not on the fence anymore.  The answer is yes.

Only a bunch of religious people could come up with and justify this type of madness.
