American Idol is the king of prime time TV. It exploded onto the scene in 2002 and has enjoyed meteoric success since then. Each year millions of aspiring musicians ( ranging from awful to awesome) pour out their hearts in an effort to win the coveted record deal.
For the first 8 seasons each judge had a musical background. In no particular order the judges were:
- Randy Jackson – Grammy award winning record producer
- Simon Cowell – Award winning music executive and manager
- Kara DioGuardi – Grammy award nominated singer, songwriter, and producer
- Paula Abdul – Emmy award winning choreographer
That was until Paula Abdul parted ways with the show. Taking a note from Monday Night Football (comedian Dennis Miller had a run as an announcer), American Idol has decided to add comedian Ellen Degeneres as a judge for its show.
Ellen’s resume reads as follows:
- Ellen Degeneres – talk show host, actress, gay rights activist, funny lady, and controversy machine.
As far as I can tell she has no background in music at all.
Like it or not American Idol means the world to legions of aspiring musicians. Should a comedian be allowed to step onstage and judge in a show of this magnitude?
