Government vs Sports

11 Comments 28 August 2009

It’s sad to say that it is not uncommon to hear about professional athletes using or testing positive for some type of drug. If the occasion draws enough media attention, the law of the land steps in and starts kicking butt.

Why?

I go to work every day, and the government has never stepped in to reprimand me for taking “no dose” pills that allowed me to stay up all night and make my deadline.  Not even the “performance enhancing” sinus pills from behind the counter were an attention getter.

My company doesn’t generate half the revenue that the NFL, MLB, or NBA creates.  So why can’t these billion dollar industries police their own workers…?

With all the issues our nation faces should our congress spend its time regulating sports and drug usage?

Our gov should stick to the powers delegated to them by the constitution and stay the “edited for Marcus’s family and friends” out of our business.

  2. Derrick says:

With the trillions in debt, millions out of work, and various war conflicts we are in, I really think baseball is the least of our problems.

  3. Emcee says:

I agree with the previous comments and I would also vote for term limits for Congress, these idiots do not “represent” it’s constituents and no one should be in Congress for more than 6-12 years (hell the president isn’t).

And continuing with drug testing, anyone who receives money from the govt should be drug tested also.

  4. Jason says:

Athletes use mad drugs, just ask Michael Beasley. Congress is filled with egotistical congressmen who like to not only draw attention to themselves, but also like to be able to say they affected something or made some great change, just to draw more attention to themselves. Doing the major league baseball “drug trials” were just one more thing they wanted to hang their hats on.

I co-sign with all the previous cosigners. There are too many real issues that need the attention of our Congress to waste time trying to police sports. I’ve seen very passionate displays from Congressmen when they are interrogating baseball players for steroids.

If only they were so passionate about the deficit….

  6. Derrick says:

I think they are so involved because they have underlying ties to the sports. So they stand to lose money or something so that is why they are always so involved. If not, why else would they seek to prevent the millions of tax dollars these athletes pay out.

  7. Marcus says:

I saw one congressman going on about it because he “grew up on baseball and it tore him apart that baseball players would cheat”. Apparently, it is so interwoven into the essence of the American male breathing pattern that we would all cease to exist if baseball players cheated.

One time Jessie was really stressed out because she was studying for SATs all while being on the cheerleading squad, volleyball team, swim team and rehearsing for the teen girl band Hot Sunday. (Put your mind to it go for it, get down and break a sweat!) She started taking caffeine pills to help her have extra energy. After a while she became addicted to the pills and had a break down causing her to miss the big concert that was to be attended by the record promoters. Fortunately, I was there in her room to hug her back to sanity.

If the government had stepped in during Jessie’s drug use, she would have been locked up and we never would have been able to make seasons 3 or 4. My point here is that when people do drugs, the consequences take care of themselves. I mean Jessie was upset for like 5 whole minutes – that is punishment enough.

Why did the show go off the air?
